Dear Mary

How are you? I hope you are well and that you are enjoying your summer holidays. I’m in Rome, in Italy now at the moment with my family. The weather is really nice here. I’m staying in a campsite about half an hour outside of the city. The campsite is great as there are lots to do. There are three swimming pools and there are water slides too. There is a restaurant and a bar with free Wi-Fi! There are playgrounds and trampolines for the children and there are basketball and tennis courts too. There is a small shop and an ice-cream shop too. We’re staying in a mobile home but you can stay in a tent either if you want. We got the train into Rome for two days. The first day we went to the Colosseum. The Colosseum is an amphitheatre from the Roman time. A lady gave us a guided tour. It was very interesting. The Colosseum is more than 1900 years old. After the Colosseum, we went to the Roman Forum. The Roman Forum is a rectangular forum surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings (and lots of stray cats!)  in the centre of the city of Rome. It was too hot and I didn’t really enjoy it. Then we went for dinner, I enjoyed a big tasty wood-fired pizza. The next day we visited St Peter’s Basilica, which is a famous church in Rome. It is a very ornate church. We hired bikes and cycled the Appian Way. I cycled along the Appian Way because you are not allowed to drive there. I got to see all the tombs. It was a nice cycle but it was very hot. The surface is very bumpy because it is the original surface from the road to Rome in the third century BC. I went to the Trevi Fountain too. The Trevi fountain looked really cool because it was evening and it was all lit up. We went to look around in the shops too. There are a lot of designer shops. I didn’t buy much though because everything was very expensive. We had a lot of nice food in Italy but we mostly had pizza and pasta. Italy is very famous for its pizza and pasta. They have lots of restaurants in Italy and people dine outdoors because of the fine weather. We went to Pompeii as well. Pompeii is famous because long ago a volcano erupted and it covered the town in a layer of ash. The town was forgotten about until years later when archaeologists discovered it. As the town was covered in ash, it was preserved. It is an interesting place to visit. Italy is a great place to go on holidays. I would highly recommend it! I hope I can go there again next year and maybe you will come too?

See you soon,

Cathy.
