A Letter Home

Loreto Abbey Dalkey

Dear Mum,

I hope you’re okay. I’m having a fantastic time over here in Thailand.

I am staying in Bangkok at the moment, in a small hostel in the city. I’m sticking to my budget, which is good! The hostel is only €8 per night, and there’s lots of street food everywhere, which is cheap and delicious, as long as you’re careful not to get sick, which I am. I made friends with a girl from my hostel. Her name is Julia and she is from the Netherlands. She’s about the same age as I am, so we have decided to travel together for a bit. It can be a little daunting and lonely, travelling alone. She’s very nice and fun, I’m sure that you’d love her too.

The flight over here was very nice. I got to watch Tangled twice, which made me think of you. I know how you love Flynn’s humour and personality (and his good looks, too!). I loved the dinner that we got, I think it’s so fun to have the little tray with all the compartments for each different element of the meal. I decided to stay in Kanchanaburi for a few days before transferring to Bangkok so that I could get used to being over here without being completely overwhelmed by the hot, loud, chaotic, and bustling city.

Kanchanaburi was very interesting. I visited the bridge over the River Kwai, and I saw where the prisoners of war worked. Their living conditions were so poor. One can barely begin to imagine what it must have been like for them. It was very sad. Kanchanaburi was nice, very pretty, but it was also very quiet. It was definitely a good idea to stay there first, and get over the jet lag, but it got a bit boring after a few days, so I moved on Thursday. I definitely prefer Bangkok to Kanchanaburi. I love it here. I have so many photos to show to you when I get back, and so many stories to tell you – I can’t wait to share everything that I’ve experienced, but I don’t want to go home. I like it too much here.

Julia and I have decided to try to get from here to Malaysia, travel around Malaysia for a bit, and then from Malaysia to North Sumatra. We want to spend some time in Indonesia and Malaysia, as they are supposed to be lovely, and I’m flying out of Denpasar, Bali, in August. Julia will be meeting her girlfriend sometime in mid to late Julyish, in Jakarta, I think.

I hope everyone is well back home, say hello to everyone from me. I miss you all so much, and I can’t wait to see you all again.

Sending my love in particular to Mary Murphy. I was so shocked when I found out that Tim died. I hope that she is coping.

Give everyone a hug and a kiss from me.

Your favourite (haha),

Maia xx
